Christmas Eve 2011

The last couple of days have been a little sad with no family or friends, but today we went for a walk and the neighbor invited us over for a drink. My friend Amy is coming for dinner tonight and then we are doing the Canyon Road Walk. I guess it is big thing here on Christmas Eve. Canyon Road is a cool street that meanders up a hill and is filled with art galleries and a few high end restaurants.

Yesterday I baked sugar cookies. It was somewhat of a struggle with new cookie sheets, new gas oven and higher altitude, but only burnt the first batch. I have seen a darling little boy on his bike and figured out he lived next door. I decided my random act of kindess would be to take him some cookies which we did before our walk today. Wish I had gotten his picture. He was so polite and thrilled with the cookies.

One of my reasons for doing this was because when I was I was young girl we had neighbor, Mrs. Nelson, she always brought over a small basket with these powder sugar cookies in it. I remember sneaking in the kitchen and stealing cookies. They were so good and I have never tasted anything like them. You would take one bite and powder sugar went everywhere. Then one year, many years later, as a married woman I saw on the cover of Family Circle Magazine a picture that looked like these cookies from my past. I bought the magazine and make the cookies from the picture. I was so thrilled. It was them. Those lovely cookies. It turns out they are a Norwegian cookie called Fattigman. Which means poor man. Should be named fat man because they are strips of dough tied in a bow and fried. I use to make them for my mom every year. Haven't made them since she passed. Anyway, I hope the little boy remembers the lady who brought him cookies at Christmas. I almost forgot. His name was Dashel. How cute.

Merry Christmas everyone. Off to Florida for a week with Vicky and John. I promise to be a better blogger when I return. Love and miss you all.
